This one is a beauty! Oh how I love it. It’s a 9 drawer Broyhill Premier MCM dresser…genuine MCM but done in a way that’s timeless. Here are the details of this makeover…
BEFORE
PREP
I sanded this one all the way down…also using paint stripper (Citistrip) with lots of elbow grease to get it down to raw wood. I knew I didn’t want to paint the entire piece and all the time I was working to remove the old finish I was contemplating what would stay wood and what I would paint. I finally decided to paint the drawers - knowing that the original hardware would pop against the paint and tie back to the beautiful wood finish.
PAINT
For the drawers, I applied a coat of primer then two coats of paint. I chose a favorite of mine; Benjamin Moore’s Creamy White. It’s a light cream color not a white. Warm with a trendy yet traditional feel to help this piece veer to the timeless vs overly modern.
STAIN
For the stain, I used a wood conditioner and then started with a new Minwax White stain. It took the yellow out of the piece (which I wanted) but it also left white in the cracks which I didn’t want. SO, over that I applied a walnut stain (a neutral brown)…wiping on and off almost immediately just to darken the cracks but leave the light wood finish I love so much. I
topped off the entire piece (drawers too) with a matte finishing wax to seal and protect.
HARDWARE
The original hardware was beautiful but had too much patina for the look I was going for. I
used a cleaner called Bar Keeper’s Friend (and an afternoon’s worth of scrubbing) to remove most of the patina (leaving some in the cracks to highlight the hardware). They turned out amazing and, if I remember right, I’m pretty sure I gasped and started talking to the dresser telling “her” (hahha) how good she looked. I guess that’s what happens when your just working with yourself and furniture pieces ;-).
FINISHING TOUCHES I love picking out drawer liners for pieces…I feel like it pulls everything I’ve been imaging together. This one is no different…it’s a new favorite of mine and EXACTLY what I wanted. It’s trendy yet also has a traditional grounded feel to it. The colors are just perfect and I couldn’t be happier with how this makeover turned out! All finished and ready to show off in a new home!
