Hello Everyone! This dresser came to us having had a previous makeover from its dark brown IKEA origins. The previous makeover consisted of sparkly paint in a botanical design. My son liked it as it was but I assured him it would still look good when I was done with it :-).
After inspecting the piece, tightening screws and taking off the hardware; I removed the sparkly paint. It came off easily since it was painted directly on top of the IKEA finish.
Next came a light sanding to ensure the paint would adhere better this time around.
Cleaned up, repairs complete (small chip on one leg that I filled) and a few coats of primer.
Now came the fun part...picking the paint color! I chose Benjamin Moore's Kendall Charcoal. We have this color on our bedroom walls so I knew I would love it.
And last but not least, new hardware in an Antique Brass finish. I'm very pleased with the end result!
As the dresser came together, I started the painting. I love painting clouds (almost anything goes really...there are so many changing colors in clouds) and decided to do a play on light since the dresser is dark and I wanted to balance the feminine/masculine look. It was Fall when I painted this and the colors/layers outside our back windows inspired the composition. You can see the progress in the photos. I did get to a point where I thought I might be finished but something felt off to me. I wanted it more blended and dreamy looking so I continued until it felt right. Again, I'm happy with the way it turned out!
I'm happy to say these pieces have sold and found a new home where I hope they bring light, beauty and happiness to those who are caring for them. Yay! As usual, it is hard to let go but I am happy to share all the love and good feelings that went into creating these pieces. I hope those vibes are felt wherever they go :-). Thank you for reading!
Amazing work Rachael, the furniture updates are great. Love your paintings, and I have to say that surprisingly, your landscapes have a remarkable similarity to the ones I've been painting for years... There is something about the way light is captured, and the composition...I am very happy to see your work, I'm already a fan.
Best regards,
Monika
