Whew! This one came a long way! It was a beautiful but oh so outdated piece to begin with. Incredibly well made…my husband picked this up from a woman who couldn’t move it and was storing it in a barn on her property. I was happy to get my hands on this but, I’ll admit, a little perplexed how I was going to pull it off. First off, it was too short and I knew I was going to have to do some heavy duty work to change out the legs. Second, the hardware was not going to work i(it had metal bows) and I didn’t like the placement. So I brainstormed for a bit on this one and this is what I ended up doing…
BEFORE
PREP
First, I took off all doors, drawers, hardware, etc (and labeled it all so I could put it back together) and then gave the piece a good sanding. I removed the original legs and reworked the base for new, more modern/simple/taller legs. After a thorough cleaning, I filled the holes for the original hardware and drilled holes for new hardware. Once that was done, I sanded and then cleaned some more :-).
PRIMER AND PAINT
Now the fun part! Painting! After a good coat of primer, I picked the paint. I’ve been seeing all this beautiful modern Americana trending in home styling and, as we head into the more traditional season of Fall, decided to do a nod of my own to this style. I picked a color I have in my own home that I’ve loved for years…Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore. It’s a beautiful deep dark rich gray. Two coats of that and this buffet is looking beautiful!
FINISHES I sealed the paint with a matte finishing wax and updated the hardware with my favorite brass knobs. I love love love the simplicity of this look. To pull it all together, I used drawer liners (peel and stick wallpaper) that blended the paint, hardware and brought in a little green. Perfection!
